BECOMING HUMANS

I really think the talk about human evolution very interesting, especially when the scientist (I don’t remember her name) showed us that there are questions without answers, for the moment. A lot of work is needed to discover evidence that help scientists to built the map of our evolution, for instance, the mysterious extinction of Neanderthals and more date about human emigrations. Surely, in the future, someone will find out mistakes in evolution theory and other links between our ancestors will appear, so those questions will be solved.

When you are interested in this subject, sometimes one thinks how short is the distance between apes and humans:  Is the language the tool that makes the human brain develops? Why only humans develop oral language? If the apes could speak, could they be clever like humans? There are experiments with chimpanzees to find ways of communicating with them and in some cases there have been good results. Consequently, next questions are: How are the apes treated by us? Why are they  used in medical researchers? Do apes have rights?

ABOUT FASHION

Two months ago I read an interview to Antoni Miró who explained that he had organized a catwalk with foreign people from Africa   without identity card. When the journalist asked him what was his opinion about complaints from people who said that fashion is flippant and the designer only wanted to earn a lot of money with a controversial subject, he answered that was false because he was very worried about immigration and fashion move lots of money while public were more aware of the problem.

Curios point of view!

In my opinion, nowadays, children and teenagers are the most important objective of publicity. Parents waste lots of money to their kids are comfortable or cool if they are adolescents. Besides, we live in a period when it’s normal “use and throw away” so we need buy more and more. Consequently, our children do the same.

PUBLIC HEALTH SERVICE OR PRIVATE MEDICINE?

This is a controversial subject in my country, because a lot of people have to wait to have an operation, which isn’t urgent. The trouble is the large number of old people who need to go in the operating theatre because of their problems with their eyes, their knees, their hips…The hospitals don’t have room for so many men and women and they are on a waiting list. Currently, a person who must be operated on the hip, he or she will have to wait for two or three years. In contrast, if the same person also pays a private medicine or private medical insurance, the operation is done immediately.

In the same way, in winter, when people get an illness like flu or other viruses, they go to the nearest hospital, which is crowded. They have to wait in corridors for a long time.   In addition, if you are in public hospital and you love your privacy, you ought to know that the rooms are shared. On the other hand, the best machines and the best technology are in the hospitals of the public health service. The private medicine, even when they have a patient who needs special cure, they move him to the public hospital.  Concluding, I believe that the public health service must improve. What’s more, it must prepare for the immigration that it will certainly grow.   The government has to use the money of our taxes to invest in health, education…to have a more comfortable future.

ABOUT MY NAME

I named my blog Orlando because when our English teacher said to us that the name of her blog was Virginia (in honour of the writer), I remembered two books by Virginia Woolf which I had read and which I liked very much. One of them is Orlando; this is a story about one's own identity. The action takes place during Middle Ages; a noble boy changes his   sex when he falls into a frozen lake. I really think the idea,  about different points of view from  the same person depending on  whether you are a man or a woman,   very original.

The other book I had read was To the lighthouse. The author talks about the relations between the members of a  family while they are spending their long holidays near the sea. I loved this book because of its tempo, it’s similar to the pace of life of summer. Finally, I choose the first title because it is a character’s name.

Henry Moore in CaixaForum

I have really thought the Henry Moore exhibition was very interesting. I have understood that his sculptures was created to be integrated into the landscape chosen by the sculptor. This idea was different to previous artists who made their works of art to put in the gardens, on the squares... but not in the middle of fields, even among the sheep. It seems me original and lovely. What’s more, the stuff of the sculptures are right for the place where they are and for the volume.
He was a controversial artist because of his idea about how had to be his sculptures: a reflection about the relation between man and environment. In the same way his drawings are the reflex of his time. I like especially which tell about  people who shelter from the bombs in the underground.

About stereotypes

When I knew I had to write about stereotypes, I believed that I wouldn't like to deal with this subject. It is difficult to speak about how the costumes, the different way of living for a part of the world are prejudices for the other part. Then I thought I could explain that some stereotypes are not true or why, in my opinion, a lot of people agree with them.It is easy to hear that the people from the South of Spain are always happy, they always sing and they never work. What's more, you still can hear that these men and these women are always in the streets without anything to do. Unfortunately, there are other similar cases: Scottish people are mean like Catalan people and also serious. In fact, the weather of Andalucia is very hot in summer and they work early in the morning and late in the evening. If you go to Sevilla you can't see people at midday because they are at home to take shelter. What's more, a long time ago this place was poor because some noble people had huge areas of land and the rest couldn't work. Nowadays the situation is changing.Surely, in Scotland they don't like to pay taxes to the British government. In the same way, in Catalonia that has been a controversial subject: how many euros do the catalans have to pay to the Spanish government? How many euros does Catalonia need to pay for its expenses? Possibly, this is the reason why the Britons and Spaniards (not everyone, fortunately) say that the Catalans and the Scots are mean.On the other hand, there are more and more travellers who have visited several lands and cultures. These people, probably, don't have prejudices about the parts of the world  where they have been.
